Description:

During the 17th century, J. van Doetechum, earned his place among the experts that contributed to a century of re-birth and map making splendor: we find that his LEO BELGICUS (1650) is a most remarkable result of his efforts. The Netherlands, depicted in the form of a lion, are bordered on three sides medallions. These medallions contain the effigies of governors of the Netherlands. The corners of the bottom border providea long note to the rider in Dutch and  in French. In the lower ride corner we find pictured the views of two residences: one in the North ( PALATIUM COMITU HOLLAND), one in the South (PALATIUM BRUXELLENSE). This is the third edition of the Leo Belgicus by Jan Jansz. Van Doetechum (first edition:1598).

Engraving Information:

This artistic reproduction of a vintage map was made using modern graphic procedures, but obtaining the results found in the antique copperplate engraving technique, as one can easily find out by lightly rubbing his/her finger on the map. This map, which is an exact reproduction of the original antique, is printed on cotton paper panels which are glued and mounted on a cotton cloth background "a stacchi" (slightly separated from each other), in order to allow for folding and easier transport. Finally, map is water-colored by hand making it a truly unique piece, worthy of the original old print.
