Herman Moll (1654? – September 22, 1732), was a cartographer, engraver, and publisher (detailed information on his life and work are available by clicking on Useful Link 1 below). Moll's map of the East Indies covers an area from the Persian border to New Guinea and the southern part of Japan, including India, Ceylon, southeast Asia, most of China, present Indonesia, the Philippines, etc. It is one of the most detailed large format English maps of the region from the early 18th century, at the height of European colonial control of this important trade region. Insets at leaf include a plan/view of Bantam, Goa,Surat, Madras, Batavia.

Engraving Information:

This artistic reproduction of a vintage map was made using modern graphic procedures, but obtaining the results found in the antique copperplate engraving technique, as one can easily find out by lightly rubbing his/her finger on the map. This map, which is an exact reproduction of the original antique, is printed on cotton paper panels which are glued and mounted on a cotton cloth background "a stacchi" (slightly separated from each other), in order to allow for folding and easier transport. Finally, map is water-colored by hand making it a truly unique piece, worthy of the original old print.
