Description:

Pierre (Pieter) van der Aa (1659-1733) was a publisher, editor and bookseller of Leiden. He started as a bookseller at the age of twenty-three, becoming a prominent member of the Booksellers' Guild.
As a publisher his output was varied and prodigious though his main interest was the production of maps and atlases, which he printed in all sizes.
His publications include an Atlas Nouveau completed in about 1710, and the Galerie Agreable du Monde, of 66 parts in 27 volumes, completed in 1729 and containing over 3 000 maps. Parts 61—63 deal solely with Africa. Many of these maps were engraved by well-known Dutch engravers such as Luiken, Goeree and Stoopendael, and are typical examples of early eighteenth-century map productions. This map (Liguria sive status Republicae Genuensis) was part of "Thesaurus antiquitatum et historiarum Italiae, Neapolis, Siciliae,...." and was originally published in 1704.

Engraving Information:

This artistic reproduction of an antique map was made using the same techniques, materials and instruments used for the original. Map is created from a zinc slab that is mounted on a wooden base and printed by hand, a piece at the time, on a press with a limited production size of 20 pieces each time. Map is printed on cotton-paper panels which are glued and mounted on a cotton cloth background "a stacchi" (slightly separated from each other), in order to allow for folding and easier transport. Finally, map is water-colored by hand, making it a truly unique piece, worthy of the original vintage map.
