Description:

Pierre Mortier  1661-1711) was a French cartographer, engraver, and print seller active in Amsterdam during the later 17th and early 18th centuries.  Thanks to his French heritage he could access the work of contemporary French cartographers such as Sanson and De Wit and he could therefore leverage the sophisticated Dutch printing establishment to issue higher quality, embellished editions of contemporary French map. This map of "Catana" shows an erupting Mount Etna in the background and two decorative cartouche at the upper corners. A numbered legend  and a dedication to the patron saint (Agatha) are displayed in the lower portion.

Engraving Information:

This artistic reproduction of an antique map was made using the same techniques, materials and instruments used for the original. Map is created from a zinc slab that is mounted on a wooden base and printed by hand, a piece at the time, on a press with a limited production size of 20 pieces each time. Map is printed on cotton-paper panels which are glued and mounted on a cotton cloth background "a stacchi" (slightly separated from each other), in order to allow for folding and easier transport. Finally, map is water-colored by hand, making it a truly unique piece, worthy of the original vintage map.
