Description:
The engraver Ignazio Sclopis ( Turin 1727 – 1793) is the author of this General view of the city of Naples, dedicated to countess Giorgiana Spencer, as indicated in the large cartouche on the bottom which also includes topographical information. Together with the Veduta di Napoli dalla parte di Chiaia (also available at Artisanmaps) this is considered one of the finest representations of the city of Naples produced in the 18th century. This view spans from the Castel dell’Ovo to the Maddalena bridge and the hill of Posillipo is visible in the background. Masterful drawing of details allows to infer meaningful information especially about the coastal area of Naples at that time.
Engraving Information:
This artistic reproduction of a vintage map was made using modern graphic procedures, but obtaining the results found in the antique copperplate engraving technique, as one can easily find out by lightly rubbing his/her finger on the map. This map, which is an exact reproduction of the original antique, is printed on cotton paper panels which are glued and mounted on a cotton cloth background "a stacchi" (slightly separated from each other), in order to allow for folding and easier transport. Finally, map is water-colored by hand making it a truly unique piece, worthy of the original old print.
