Description:

The 17th century has seen the birth of
numerous map-making studios that worked furiously on the production/construction
of new maps or the updating of old ones thanks to new geographic knowledge
gathered by navigators and explorers. The travels and works of Columbus, Vespucci,
Cabot and Magellan were the production of a new scientific maturation and the 17th
century saw the presence of many illustrious scientists and gifted scholars. There
was an unquestionable progress in geodetics with direct reflections on map-making
accuracy, this thanks also to Snellius, (Willebrod Snell, Dutch, 1591-1626). He was
the first to measure a geodetic “base” by using a “network” of triangles that covered
the whole national territory so that in the end he could determine the geographic
coordinates of Dutch cities and produce useful elements for calculating the size of
the Earth. Of course, the instruments and means of measurement were not perfectly
accurate but the Earth was almost completely delineated. It is at the end of the 17th
century that we see the birth of CARTE GENERALE CONTENANTE LES
MONDES...” by the French map-maker, C.A. Berey.

Engraving Information:

This artistic reproduction of a vintage map was made using modern graphic procedures, but obtaining the results found in the antique copperplate engraving technique, as one can easily find out by lightly rubbing his/her finger on the map. This map, which is an exact reproduction of the original antique, is printed on cotton paper panels which are glued and mounted on a cotton cloth background "a stacchi" (slightly separated from each other), in order to allow for folding and easier transport. Finally, map is water-colored by hand making it a truly unique piece, worthy of the original old print.
