Description:

In the 5th century B.C. Herodotus said that: " It is quiet curious to note how so many people are able to produce world maps in a circular shape". The words of this famous Greek historian is unfortunately all that remains of the network representing the Earth in its first great season which flourished during ancient Greece.in fact, the geographic maps from the historical period have not survived and the oldest example of such dates back to fifteen centuries after Herodotus words. The reason for this was the perishable materials used for map making which were made practical and therefore suffered wear and tear after long periods of time. Nevertheless, the evolution of map making, even since pre historic times has been reconstructed rather easily thanks to remaining fragments and artifacts. Already by 1600 this art had made enormous progress. The surviving maps that have been handed down are testimony to this. This past century has seen the birth of of numerous map making studios that worked furiously on the production/ construction of new maps or the updating of old ones thanks to new geographic knowledge gathered by navigators and explorers. The travels and works of of Colombo, Vespucci, Caboto, and Magellan were the production  of a new scientific maturation and the 17th century saw the presence of many illustrious scientist and gifted scholars. There was an unquestionable  progress in geodetics with direct reflections on map making accuracy , this  thanks also to ( Willefrod Snell, Dutch, 1591- 1626). He was the first to measure  a geodetic base by using a network of triangle that covered the whole national territory so that in the end he could determine the geographic coordinates  of Durch cities and produce useful elements for calculating the size of the Hearth. Of course, the instruments and means of measurement were not perfectly accurate but the Earth was almost completely delineated. It is at the end of 17th century (1661) that we see the birth of of this world map by the Dutch map maker, Nicolaus van Wassenaer

Engraving Information:

This artistic reproduction of a vintage map was made using modern graphic procedures, but obtaining the results found in the antique copperplate engraving technique, as one can easily find out by lightly rubbing his/her finger on the map. This map, which is an exact reproduction of the original antique, is printed on cotton paper panels which are glued and mounted on a cotton cloth background "a stacchi" (slightly separated from each other), in order to allow for folding and easier transport. Finally, map is water-colored by hand making it a truly unique piece, worthy of the original old print.
