Description:

Peter Apian's 1520 World Map is one of the most important early maps of the world. For many years, it was believed that Apian's map was the first map to use the name America, as well as the earliest to utilize a truncated cordiform ( heart shaped ) projection. It was not untill the discovery in 1901 of the sole surviving example of Walseemuller's 12 sheets map of the World, published in 1507, that the true source of Apian's map was the Waldseemuller map. Apian's map follows the Walseemuller model with a close geography and technical correspondence ; there is one significant improvement in Apian's map, the creation of a passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean which is not present in Waldseemuller's map of the world. Its first publication was in 1520.

Engraving Information:

This artistic reproduction of a vintage map was made using modern graphic procedures, but obtaining the results found in the antique copperplate engraving technique, as one can easily find out by lightly rubbing his/her finger on the map. This map, which is an exact reproduction of the original antique, is printed on cotton paper panels which are glued and mounted on a cotton cloth background "a stacchi" (slightly separated from each other), in order to allow for folding and easier transport. Finally, map is water-colored by hand making it a truly unique piece, worthy of the original old print.
